Via The Huffington Post: “While one teen’s cardboard prom dress was celebrated for its uniqueness, another teen’s attempt at making a red, white and blue fashion statement was flagged as inappropriate. Texanna Edwards, a senior at Tennessee’s Gibson County High School, was turned away from her prom last week after appearing in a custom-made dress that resembled the Confederate flag, the Tennessean reports. The 18-year-old said she was surprised the school didn’t allow her to attend the dance in her gown, saying other students regularly wear clothes and jewelry bearing the Confederate flag symbol…”.* Ana Kasparian, Jayar Jackson, and former prosecutor Steve Oh break it down on The Young Turks. *Read more from The Huffington Post: www.huffingtonpost.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Just to clarify, I’m not saying the Confederate flag is necessarily equal to hate, but in the general population’s eyes, it’s seen as racist and unpatriotic.
Well-mannered answers only please. Thanks you.
Jack Ripper- I’m not interested in displaying either one of these.
I often hear that the confederate flag symbolizes the history of the south and that displaying it is an act of southern pride. And I’m ok with being proud of your family and your history. But doesn’t the history of the south include a history of prejudice, slavery, and racism? (I mean, there were still segregated schools in Florida until the 1990′s.) How is displaying the flag not an act of pride for bigoted behavior?
Without getting everyone’s panties in a wad, I was curious about what the confederate flag means to this day and age. Do not think this is an attack on either flag. Both have history to be respected. I’ve just seen a handful of confederate flags flying here in the south and I had no idea what that meant to me and the modern day and age.
Should people today who display the Confederate flag (flag and bars) be considered advocates of radical oppression and intolerance or simply defends of southern history and tradition?
